Religious Freedom in Georgia: The upcoming legislative session will, almost certainly, see a reintroduction of Senator Josh McKoon’s (District 29) Religious Freedom Restoration Act (SB 129). This bill mirrors legislation already enacted in other states, which in turn, mirrors federal legislation intended to protect certain rights of religious adherents. At the heart of this proposed bill is the perceived need to protect religious adherents from government overreach by adopting federal rules defining the term “compelling government interest” and requiring the use of the least burdensome method of accommodating exceptions.
